Resemin’s Mechanical Engineer and Structural Analyst Manuel Morales spoke about how Resemin efficiently optimized their underground mining equipment design and testing with SOLIDWORKS and cloud-based simulation tools during a recent webinar. The company conquered several challenges related to hardware limitations, regulatory standards, design turnaround times, field failures and service and maintenance.Morales detailed how Resemin leveraged both SOLIDWORKS and cloud-based simulation to shorten analysis run times from two days to two hours and reduced prototyping by 70 percent, cut its machine delivery times by 50 percent and increased throughput.
Founded in 1989 in Lima, Peru, Resemin has grown to become the third-largest global manufacturer of underground mining and drilling equipment. In 2008 Resemin pivoted from using AutoCAD® 2D tools to implementing SOLIDWORKS®; this move significantly enhanced their production capabilities. This transition enabled them to reduce analysis run times from two days to merely two hours, cut prototyping efforts by 70 percentage, cut machine delivery times by 50 percent and increase their production throughput by 100 percent. The productivity gained with SOLIDWORKS combined with the needs for advanced nonlinear vibration and fatigue analyses to extend equipment durability and develop more innovative products prompted Resemin to evaluate 3DEXPERIENCE® Works solutions from Dassault Systèmes.
Resemin conducted a benchmark comparison between Ansys® Simulation Premium software and 3DEXPERIENCE Works Simulation. Both tools delivered accurate results, however 3DEXPERIENCE Works Simulation outperformed in ease of setup and speed, completing tasks three hours faster than Ansys.
This efficiency and 3DEXPERIENCE Works Simulation’s compatibility with SOLIDWORKS, led Resemin to adopt 3DEXPERIENCE Works. The integration of this tool into their workflow not only improved the performance of existing designs but also fueled innovation in new product development, which led to expanding their product line and doubling their annual production from 60 to 115 machines.
The implementation of advanced simulation tools aligns with Resemin’s business objectives to minimize product failures and warranty claims. Such claims are a significant expense for top manufacturers in the industry, amounting to 1.5 to 2 percent of revenue, nearly $2 billion annually. The combination of SOLIDWORKS for design and 3DEXPERIENCE Works for running simulations in the cloud gives Resemin a seamless solution for a synchronized design, modeling, and simulation process. These tools are critically important for improving product reliability, durability, and performance.
